MIMA Universal Search Presentation

by Miguel Salcido

in Organic SEO

I attended and spoke at the August MIMA event last night. MIMA (Minnesota Interactive Marketing Association) is a fantastic group of professional and highly educated Internet marketers, creative designers, and lovers of all things digital. They have one of the better organized communities that I have come across. And with abut 250 people at their monthly event it was a very fun event!

I cannot say enough about how great the city, the people, and the food was in Minneapolis! And believe it or not they have a large, active, and mature digital community.

I presented on Universal Search and how to optimize for it. The presentation was packed full of actionable optimization tips and was very well received. I too have felt slighted by most Internet Marketing events and conferences in that I hardly ever walk away with “real” techniques or tips on how to improve a site’s traffic. So I set out to create the most “meaty” presentation that I could and I firmly believe that I delivered on that.

People walked away with a better understanding of what Universal Search is, it’s impact, and how to optimize for the more popular Google search verticals. The presentation covered optimization for Video, Image, News, Maps/Local, Blog, Shopping, and Real Time results.

I will update this post with links to the video, presentation, photos, and here is the press release.

Hi Miguel,
Thanks for a fantastic presentation at MIMA last night! I really appreciated your effort to include a lot of actionable tips and advice. I feel like I got a lot out of it.

Plus, you clearly gave our local sports teams a lift :)

Thanks Rachel! I think that Mima should fly me out for the Twins stretch run this season! I loved the city, people and the food and would love to come back sometime.

Also, I just noticed that my RSS feed seems to be messed up. I’ll work on fixing that so come back again soon and subscribe. I plan on getting into more detail on optimizing for specific Google verticals.

Thanks Brad! I followed you back. I like your blog layout, nice and clean. That is a nice pic you took, and I appreciate the link! I am also very glad that you enjoyed and learned from the presentation. Here is another tip that will improve your blog.

I noticed that your URL for the blog posts are the default and contain the “?p=14″ in the URL. If you want your blog posts to have better URLs change the permalink setting. Under the Permalinks section, select Custom Structure, and add this /%postname%/ and it will use your blog title for the URL. An additional tip is that they let you customize the URL while creating the post at the top of the page in case the exact title of the post is too long or you don’t really like it. Having more descriptive URLs for your posts will increase CTR and is better for search engines as it clues them in to the theme of the page.
