Link Wheels Examined

by Miguel Salcido

in Link Building, SEO Tools

The link wheel, as a technique, has been around for a very long time but has mostly been relegated to blackhat affiliates. It actually still is for the most part. But it started way back when and has slowly become mainstream, taking on the name of “link wheel” within the past couple of years. Services like SEO Link Wheelers have sprouted up, and just this week TextLinkAds.com launched a link wheel service. And as an SEO consultant and link builder one has to examine all aspects of SEO black, grey, white, or any other shade. But first let me explain what a link wheel is.

Link Wheels Explained

SEO

A link wheel consists of separate URLs with content on them and two links within that content. One of the links points to the site you are trying to rank, and the other link will point to another URL in the wheel. This other URL in the wheel will also have content on it that contains two links, one to your main site, or “money site” and the other to yet another URL in the wheel. Thus creating a virtual wheel with your main site in the middle and other URLs around it that all link to each other and your site as well. This diagram helps explain.

link wheel

This diagram above shows a traditional link wheel. Many people are still using this but the really savvy people are using a variation of this that does not have a closed loop, which leaves an easy footprint for Google to find and penalize. The new way to build link wheels is to link chaotically, rather than systematically. Below is an example.

Link Wheel Tools

The beauty of link wheels is that they are very cheap to execute. But the downside is that they do take a great deal of time, which is why most people choose to outsource them to companies like SEO Link Wheelers. Basically you can setup a keyword rich blog on many different Web 2.0 sites such as Blogger, Posterous, etc. These sites let you do this for free and give you a nice keyword on a subdomain such as keyword.posterous.com. These sites are usually heavily spidered and indexed which adds to the appeal. Then what people do is they take the RSS feed from these sites and submit them to RSS aggregators like Feedage or Zimbio.

SEO

Another tactic for link wheelers is to incorporate article directories to your link wheel as well. Sites like EzineArticles, GoArticles and ArticlesBase allow you to submit articles with links in them. So throw some of these into the wheel along with your Web 2.0 sites. And to add to the mix, if you can, throw in blog posts to create more diversity. Again, all of these things can be done for free by yourself. Everything except for the blog links unless you have access to your own network of blogs.

Link Wheel Results

So I’m sure that you are all wondering what sort of results one could expect from using link wheels. Well I can tell you that you’re not going to rank for “search engine optimization” or any other super competitive keywords just by using link wheels. But you can actually get pretty darned good results for some longer tail stuff and less competitive terms. Going after branded terms with link wheels, especially when trying to rank internal pages, works really well.

I have tried experimenting with adding fresh content to the Web 2.0 sites, and linking to them as well. But this is extremely time consuming and I found myself not doing it enough and therefore it’s hard for me to say that maintaining and building up the authority of the sites in a link wheel works better than just building more linkwheels. I think that if you managed to keep up and promote 5-10 Web 2.0 sites that it could probably pay off though, just haven’t done it myself. Plus, people that have been using link wheels for a very long time say its just more efficient to build new linkwheels rather than to try to promote existing ones.

Link Wheel Services

I’ve tried many of them and by far an away the best service is from SEOLinkWheelers.com. I’ve used them on personal projects for the past year and I have to say that it is rare in this industry to find such a well put together operation. I’ve seen the service and the quality of content improve DRAMATICALLY over the past year, and it wasn’t all that bad to begin with. But my most recent orders came back within 7-10 days (this is super fast turnaround!) and the quality of the content was outstanding.

SEO

SEO Link Wheelers really understand what they are doing and have refined their process well. They mix in Web 2.0 sites, article sites, blogs, and even create YouTube videos and add them to the mix. I love their service so much I decided to recommend them. If you sign up via any of my affiliate links in this post feel free to contact me (rankings@organicseoconsultant.com) and I’ll help you decide on what keywords to target, on what URLs, and I’ll even throw in 10 PageRank 4 bonus links for you. I do not promote services that I have not tried and that are not good and I can safely say that SEOLinkWheelers.com are legit.

Thanks Miguel for this link wheel explained blog. I have a little doubt regarding link wheel. It will be my pleasure if you help me. I need to know that what if links or posts are break after link wheel creation. Do we need to check all the links in link wheel daily or any other solution is there. I am waiting for your suggestion.

Interesting article, linkwheels certainly have been around for a long time, slightly greyhat though if done correctly in a whitehat way it can certainly be effective for the long run.
